What Is AI Visibility? A Plain-English Guide for Local Business Owners
AI visibility is how often, and how well, AI assistants mention your business when people ask them for a recommendation. If a customer asks ChatGPT "who's a good roofer in Pensacola?" and your company is in the answer, you have AI visibility for that question. If you're not, a competitor got the job before you knew there was one.
The term is new, but people are clearly looking it up. Keyword data from DataForSEO, published by Figo in October 2026, shows US searches for "ai visibility" averaging about 830 a month over the past year, up from under 100 the year before. Business owners are noticing that their customers' habits are changing.
This guide explains what AI visibility is, how it differs from regular search rankings, and how to measure it for your business.
Where AI visibility happens
There are four places your customers are most likely to get an AI-written answer about local businesses today:
- ChatGPT: asked directly, often with web search switched on.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: the AI summary at the top of many Google results, plus Google's conversational search mode.
- Gemini: Google's assistant, built into Android phones and Google apps.
- Perplexity: an answer engine that always cites its sources.
Siri (via Apple Maps data), Microsoft Copilot (via Bing), and Grok matter too, and the list will keep changing. The underlying idea stays the same: a machine reads the web and gives your customer a short answer instead of a list of links.
How it's different from ranking on Google
With classic Google search, you're one of ten blue links plus a map pack of three. The customer still sees several options and chooses.
With an AI answer, the assistant often does the choosing. It might name three businesses, or one, with a sentence about why. There's no page two. That makes AI visibility more all-or-nothing than search rankings.
A few other differences:
| Google search rankings | AI visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | A position (1–10, map pack) | Whether you're named, where in the answer, and what's said |
| What drives it | Relevance, links, proximity, reviews | What many sources agree on about you |
| How stable it is | Fairly stable day to day | Answers vary between assistants and between runs |
| What you can track | Rank trackers, Search Console | Repeated prompts across assistants |
The good news is that much of the groundwork overlaps. Google has said its foundational SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A business with a strong Google Business Profile, good reviews, and a clear website is already part of the way there.
The four parts of AI visibility
When we measure AI visibility for a local business, we look at four things.
1. Presence
Are you named at all? Across a set of realistic questions ("best dentist in Houston," "dentist in Houston that takes Medicaid," "emergency dentist open Saturday"), what share of answers include you? This is your mention rate, and it's the headline number.
2. Position
When you're named, are you first or fifth? Customers tend to act on the first one or two names, just as they did with search results.
3. Accuracy
Is what the assistant says about you correct? Wrong hours, an old address, a service you stopped offering, or a closed location all cost you customers even when you are mentioned. Wrong information usually traces back to an outdated listing somewhere.
4. Sources
Which websites did the assistant rely on? If it keeps citing a local "best of" list or a directory you're not on, that tells you exactly where to get listed. Sources are the most actionable part of AI visibility.
Why AI visibility matters for local businesses in particular
A national brand can show up in AI answers on brand recognition alone. A local business can't. Assistants have to piece together who you are from your website, your listings, your reviews, and what local sources say about you. If those pieces are missing or contradict each other, the assistant names someone it's more sure about.
That's also why local businesses can win. You don't need to be famous. You need to be clear, consistent, and vouched for:
- Clear: your website says plainly what you do, where, and for whom.
- Consistent: your name, address, phone, and hours match across every listing.
- Vouched for: you have real reviews and mentions on the sites assistants trust.
How to measure your AI visibility
The free, manual way
- Write down 10 questions a customer might ask, mixing general ("best plumber in Biloxi") and specific ("plumber in Biloxi for tankless water heater").
- Ask each question in ChatGPT (with search on), Gemini, Perplexity, and Google, using a fresh chat or private window each time.
- For each answer, record whether you were named, your position, any errors, and the sources cited.
- Repeat monthly. Answers vary, so look at trends, not single results.
That's 40 answers a month. It's very doable by hand for a single location, and it'll teach you a lot. Our step-by-step guide on checking what AI says about your business has a template.
The automated way
AI visibility tools run these prompts on a schedule across assistants and track the results over time. NearbyPick's free AI visibility scan does this for your business and category, shows who's being recommended instead, and lists the fixes most likely to move the needle.
What improves AI visibility
In rough order of impact for most local businesses:
- Let AI crawlers in. Make sure your website isn't blocking OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, or Googlebot.
- Fix your listings. Make Google Business Profile, Apple, Bing, Yelp, and your industry directories accurate and identical.
- Earn detailed reviews. Volume and recency matter, and so does the review text describing what you did.
- Clarify your website. Plain-language services, locations, and FAQs, plus LocalBusiness schema markup.
- Get mentioned locally. Local news, "best of" lists, associations, community sites, and video.
We cover each of these in detail in How to Get Your Local Business Recommended by ChatGPT.
Common questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT? No. Some assistants are testing ads, but the organic recommendations can't be bought. Anyone promising guaranteed placement in AI answers is overselling.
Is AI visibility replacing SEO? No. It builds on it. Most of what helps AI visibility (accurate listings, reviews, a clear website) also helps your Google rankings.
How fast can it change? Assistants search the web live, so fixing a blocked crawler or a wrong listing can show up within weeks. Reviews and mentions build over months.
Do I need to track every assistant? Start with ChatGPT and Google, since they reach the most people. Add Gemini and Perplexity when you can; they often cite different sources, which shows you different gaps.
The bottom line
AI visibility is just word of mouth, read by a machine. The businesses that get recommended are the ones the web describes clearly and consistently, and that real customers vouch for. Measure where you stand, fix what's broken, and check back monthly.
